6 Ways to Self-Care in 15 Minutes or Less

If you Google self-care, the definition that comes up is:
the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health.

While it’s somewhat clear, it’s also kind of vague isn’t it? Self-care means different things to different people. For some, it truly is taking time to get their manicure and pedicure, for others it might mean doing a face mask, reading a good book or setting boundaries. Yes, setting boundaries can be a form of self-care.

You don’t have to be stressed to practice self-care either. Actually, if you practice self-care regularly, it may help you manage stress a bit better.

I used to think that I did not have time for self-care rituals and now, I try to carve out at least 15 minutes a day to prioritize myself. I’m proud to say, more days than not, it’s more than 15 minutes and it makes all the difference. If you don’t think you have time to put yourself first, think again. Here are a five ways you can practice self-care in 15 minutes or less.

1. Morning pages

Very morning I put pen to paper and let my mind wander. I write down everything that goes on in my mind for 3 pages. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it’s questions, some times it ends up being words or reminders, but it helps me to clear my mind before I start my day.

2. Move your body

I love Melissa Wood Health workouts or a 15-20 minute Peloton class in the morning. It feels so good to move my body and to do some form of movement before I start my day. Don’t feel like riding your bike, or even working out in the morning? Don’t. Do what feels good for you. I want to start going for walks after dinner - maybe give that one a whirl.

3. 10 minutes of meditation

10 minutes of mindfulness can do wonders - no matter what time of day. I love using the Calm app, particularly because of the calming sounds in the background. It feels very grounding. If actually meditating does not feel like your vibe, no problem. How about a few deep breaths? Consider inhaling for 4 seconds, holding for 4 seconds and exhaling for 4 seconds (it’s called box breathing!). Do it 1-3 times and see how you feel.

4. Sit outside

Being in nature can be good for your mind and body. If you have 15 minutes in the morning or in the afternoon, how about take your coffee or lunch outside and just “be”? Bring your phone or be daring and leave it inside, but enjoying being present can really make a difference and even rejuvenate you for the rest of your day.

5. Try a facial or lymphatic massage

Get a jade roller, gua sha and or a lymphatic drainage body tool, play some music and get some oils and go to town!

6. Try something new in the kitchen

Consider juicing, making a smoothie or looking up a new, quick recipe and just enjoying time with yourself in the kitchen!
